The Do’s and Don’ts of Social Media Content

Social media has taken over the digital world in the last decade. Companies have found that the ability to display their products and services on social media has changed the game and brought them lucrative results. However, posting on social media can be detrimental to your brand if you’re posting the wrong content. Here are a few pointers for what to do and what not to do when posting online.

Don’t Be Fake

Audiences know when you’re not being true to your image. Brands that try too hard to relate to what’s trending or fit in with a demographic they’re not a part of can actually decrease the support they receive. Whatever content you put out, make sure it’s true to your brand’s image. Authenticity is one of the pillars for any company, and embracing your brand’s personality will create an organic connection between you and your audience.

Do Make Entertaining Posts

Studies have shown that audience engagement increases when you post entertaining and educational content. If your brand is trying to promote a message, create content that makes your audience want to stop and listen. Funny posts work best for some brands, but if that’s not your brand image, then try to create visually appealing posts that represent what you do best. Create messages that inspire your potential customers to act now and make them want to learn even more about your brand.  Remember, engaging content is the best content, so find ways to make your social media presence stand out.

Don’t Get On a Soapbox

Social media can be a great way to express yourself, but it’s easy to overshare. Opinions are valid, but they should be avoided by most brands. Expressing polarizing religious or political opinions can push customers away. In fact, many customers will boycott companies altogether because of conflicting opinions. Most times,  it’s better to hold your tongue than to share too much. If you feel strongly about a certain hot button topic, weigh the risks of revealing it to your consumer. It can be hard to separate your own beliefs from your brand, but it’s best to avoid getting on a soapbox in your social media content.

Do Create Original Content

Millions of social media posts go out every day. Companies are promoting their products left and right, but what makes audiences choose a brand? Original content is key to capturing your audience. Ditch repetitive formats, and try to think outside the box. Make a social media campaign that garners attention, or create brand specific content that sets you apart from the rest. Don’t inundate your audience with boring content every day. Customers can get overwhelmed with the amount of content companies put out, and their annoyance can lead to them ignoring your message altogether. Find interesting, original content that speaks to you and post your take on it.
